9-7-06 Stem Cell Research Cultivating Opportunities
These are exciting times in the field of stem cell research. Each day scientists around
the world are working hard in the pursuit of remarkable medical cures. Even though the
field of study is young, great strides have already been made. These advances bring
great hope that someday a wide array of deadly diseases can become lost to history.

Nevertheless, I understand this is a complicated issue. There are important ethical
questions that must be considered when developing public policy. Like most people, I
am hopeful for advances in stem cell research that will allow embryos to remain intact
during the research process. Until this technology is available, we cannot forget about
these delicate issues.

Yet, we must move forward with the research. The potential for stem cells to save lives
is something we cannot ignore.

A significant amount of cutting edge research is being done right here in Wisconsin.
Our advances in the field of stem cells continue the great Wisconsin tradition of
innovation. In fact, our state is the birthplace of stem cell research and we continue to
be one of the world’s leaders in the field. Our leadership position was acknowledged
last year when the WiCell Research Institute was selected by the National Institutes of
Health to be this country’s only national stem cell bank.

Recently I was able to spend some time at the University of Wisconsin Research Park.
The visit gave me the opportunity to see first-hand the incredible expanse of research
that is taking place here in our area. The scientists I met are the true pioneers in the
field. I came away from the meetings impressed with their knowledge, professionalism,
and commitment to conducting research in accordance to the highest possible ethical
standards.

This research is cultivating endless opportunities for our citizens. First and foremost is
the potential to save lives. Beyond this, we are already beginning to see the economic
benefits of hosting research in our state. The high-quality jobs and prestige associated
with this groundbreaking research has the potential to boost our local economy for
many years into the future. As a state, we must be pro-active in creating an
environment that welcomes national research firms to our area.

As we move forward, it is important to remember that with expanding technology comes
increased responsibility. We must continue to explore the intriguing possibilities while
remaining aware of the important ethical concerns. We must also remain mindful of the
ultimate goal. If this research proves to be successful in curing diseases such as
diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s, generations to come will benefit from our
commitment today. As your State Representative, I am working hard so that we make
the most of the opportunity.
